October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Each day in October, we will post a fact about domestic violence and sexual assault to the homepage.

Please take some time to think about these facts, what they mean for victims of domestic and sexual violence, and how we can all work to prevent abuse and support survivors. Share this information with your family, friends, coworkers, and neighbors and on social media to help raise awareness.

October 1: 1-in-4 women and 1-in-7 men are victims of severe physical violence in their lifetime.
October 2: 1 out of every 6 American women have been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime.
October 3: 1-in-3 adolescents in the U.S. report being the victim of physical, sexual, or emotional abuse from a dating partner.
October 4: One act of domestic violence occurred every 8 minutes and 52 seconds in New Jersey.
October 5: A victim is 5-6 times more likely to be killed if their abuser possesses a firearm than if there are no guns in the house.
October 6: 98% of rapists will never spend a day in prison.
October 7: A child cannot consent to any form of sexual activity.
October 8: Strangulation is more serious than professionals have realized. Loss of consciousness can occur within 5-to-10 seconds, death within 4-to-5 minutes.
October 9: Victims of prior attempted strangulation are 7 times more likely of becoming a homicide victim.
October 10: Police reported 6,437 domestic violence offenses in Essex County in 2016- the most in New Jersey.
October 11: The most frequent day domestic violence occurs is Sunday and the most common hours are 8pm-12am.
October 12: Children were involved or present during 28% of all domestic violence incidents occurring in 2015.
October 13: College women are twice as likely to be sexually assaulted than robbed.
October 14: Intimate partner violence accounts for 15% of all violent crime.
October 15: 1-in-7 women and 1-in-18 men have been stalked by an intimate partner during their lifetime to the point that they believed they or someone close to them would be harmed or killed.
October 16: For every three victims of teen dating violence, only one will ever tell anyone about the abuse.
October 17: More police officers are killed responding to domestic violence calls than any other type of service call.
October 18: In States that require background checks, 38-47% fewer women are shot to death by their intimate partners.
October 19: Only 34% of people who are injured by their intimate partner receive medical care for their injuries.
October 20: Women between the ages of 18-20 are the most commonly abused by an intimate partner.
October 21: Often even in fatal cases of strangulation, there is no external evident injury whatsoever.
October 22: 50% of youth survivors of dating violence or sexual assault attempt suicide versus 12% of non-abused girls and 5% of non-abused boys.
October 23: Children witness approximately 50% of strangulation assaults, causing deep, long-term emotional trauma and dramatically increasing the likelihood that male children will repeat the violence as teenagers and adults.
